It's still the new year, which means that you have tons of new opportunities to get your life on track. And for many of us, that means living a fuller, healthier life.
Unfortunately, plenty of men are considered to be in poor health, and even more are obese. But that doesn't mean you can't turn things around.
Here are five health tips for men that are sure to improve your life.
1. Visit Your Physician
We know that sometimes guys can be a bit stubborn, especially about going to the doctor.
But when you stop to think about it, what's the point? There's no reason to fight disease or illness on your own. Even if you're fine, it's far better to know that you're healthy than risk ignoring a potentially fatal illness.
There will always be plenty of excuses for you to skip that annual physical. But trust us, it's for your health. A few minutes every year may save your life.
2. Take Care of Yourself Mentally
When we hear the word ‘fitness' we tend to think about lifting weights and getting ripped or running marathons.
That can certainly be part of one's fitness goals, but part of a man's overall health includes his mental well-being.
Take care of yourself mentally, as well as physically. If you're feeling depressed, there's no shame in reaching out. Even if you simply talk to a friend, there's so much strength in reaching out.
If you're scared, know that you're not alone. One in four people around the globe will be affected by mental health issues.
3. Eat to Live, Don't Live to Eat
First thing's first: it's okay to eat the double cheeseburger and fries every now and again.
As long as you do so in moderation, and regularly eat healthy, protein-rich meals.
The word ‘moderation' is important here. We're not saying cut out junk food entirely. But try and live by the 85/15 rule. Eat well 85 percent of the time, then enjoy a guilty pleasure the final 15 percent.
You can still eat all of your favorite foods and be healthy, but make sure you're eating smaller portions.
4. Get Enough Sleep
It doesn't matter how busy your life is, you can't ignore sleep. Be sure to get at least six to eight hours of quality sleep per night.
Quality sleep means to rest in an environment free of distractions. Turn off Netflix or at least set your TV to sleep mode, and make your environment as dark and quiet as possible.
After a few nights of restful sleep, you're sure to notice a difference.
5. Make Workouts Fun
Let's face it, no list of health tips for men is complete without mentioning workouts.
However, you should keep in mind that it isn't always necessary to go to the gym. What's important is that you get at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
That can mean something as easy as a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, or as tough as a hike outside of town. Ideally, you should keep your regimen varied and exciting so you don't get bored.
Get out there and explore! There's a whole world of fitness waiting to be discovered.
